This year, the accredited 5-star luxury Marina Mandarin Singapore Hotel is once again well-prepared for the festive seasons. For the first time, guests will be greeted not only by the life-size gingerbread house at the hotel lobby, but also life-size toy soldiers! Yes, by that, I mean, ‘mascots‘, a perfect photo-taking opportunity for adults and children alike. This is in line with the hotel’s festive theme of ‘A Nutcracker Story‘.
Christmas menu is available in December at Aquamarine (buffet-style), Peach Blossoms (Chinese restaurant) and Atrium Lounge. Following the season of giving, there is also the hotel’s traditional and iconic balloon drop at the Atrium Lounge on New Year’s Eve countdown, where you can find yourself drowned in a sea of 30,000 balloons, dropped onto the 20-storey high Atrium. It is those where you have to experience it once in your lifetime, not to mention how Instavideo-worthy it will be, right!
Heritage Peranakan Roasted Turkey ($148/5kg) :: Marinated with nonya spices and accompanied with mushroom stuffing, sautéed vegetables and homemade tamarind jus, it is the creation’s debut in the hotel kitchen’s oven this year. Save for its unique touches of peranakan marination, the Christmas bird was pretty ordinary. Turkeys being turkeys, they possess tough and dry meat in general. While the hotel’s rendition was still slightly skewed toward the dry side, I thought it was pretty reasonable considering that it’s 5kg; a whole big block of meat to handle. That said, the tamarind jus would then come in handy here.
Roasted Australian Lamb Rack ($98/800g) :: On to another Christmas have-to, this time round, I was more impressed. You’d never have guessed what it’s coated with. Chocolate (oh yes you read that right) and Christmas ‘brandy’ dried fruit, and chopped walnut and hazelnut. The meat itself was not at all tough, and went perfectly and uniquely well with the thin layer of mildly sweet chocolate, with apparent notes of crunchiness from the nuts. I’m already considering getting this for my family party.
Christmas Yule Log ($55 – $60/1kg) :: I note, every November / December period is a headache when it comes to deciding which log cake to get. If you’re looking for the traditional kind of yule log (meaning more of the sponge cake one and less of the ice-cream ones), but not exactly the traditional, boring chocolate ones, I’d recommend Marina Mandarin’s Earl Grey Yule Log ($60/1kg). I confess, when I get a pot of tea, I’d more often than not, go for Earl Grey. The Yule Log is made of earl grey mousse (with consistently noticeable flavor) with mixed citrus peels, almond joconde (a mix between a biscuit & sponge cake) sponge and milk coating. And good thing too, the partnership doesn’t get too sweet too.
Festive homemade goodies are also some of the smaller items you can get home for the celebration. For chocolates, please get the Santa Boots with 8pcs Pralines ($12) (top left corner of the deconstructed hamper photo). Interestingly, the large container of santa boots is a chocolate piece itself, to which we were oblivious to and accidentally crushed it, fortunately after taking the photos though. We thanked the lucky star (there, the one in the Jar of Christmas Cookies ($20) to the right of it).
Festive Hampers are priced at $158 and $248. The above photos + house red wine + gingerbread figurine + santa with gift would make up the $158 hamper.
