They say the higher you go in ION Orchard, the more expensive the stores are. Generally true. The Marmalade Pantry @ Orchard ION, Level 3, offers an open concept, relatively posh dining experience. One would expect to see middle aged, rich tai-tai to patronize the restaurant. Its black theme makes it looks sleek and neat, and although it might seem a little out of place from the rest of the level, the feeling, when you actually sit in the restaurant itself, kind of cuts you out of the outside.
Truffled Field Mushroom Risotto ($22++) :: Of the handful of Risotto I’ve savored, this rendition is personally considered to be disappointing. I guess there is nothing majorly wrong, but the overpowering taste of the parsley just steered the dish the wrong direction. If you are not a fan of parsley, you should opt for it to be omitted, or you’ll have a hard time dodging it throughout the whole course of the meal.
Spaghetti Carbonara ($24++) :: Although too, with flat parsley, it is only as garnish. It is also topped with poached eggs. It tastes just fine, just as good as any other Carbonara. Though that’s when the price comes into play. For a plate of Carbonara at this price, is slightly elevated. To put it bluntly, it can be enjoyed at a lower price at other places. But if money isn’t an issue, this wouldn’t be too.
Oriental Grilled King Salmon ($26++) :: Two dollars difference, of course I’d choose a King Salmon over Carbonara any day. What’s more is, the Salmon is cooked to perfection, although I must say I always have doubts whether the standard would remain for these dishes every single time – it’s so challenging to keep it at status quo. Nevertheless, I’ve had it on a good day, and that’s it. It comes with a small touch of Japanese too – soba.
Chocolate Nemesis ($14++) :: Don’t dismiss it just yet! It might look small for the price, but it certainly tastes big. Don’t be misled by its look – this innocent looking piece of cake is far from just being a piece of cake. It’s very rich in flavor, and I bet’ya, it’ll take a lot for one person to finish it him/herself. I like it a lot, and even two persons would have more than enough of it from the sharing.
I’ve also had the opportunity to try their renowned Cupcake, namely the Chocolate Deluxe ($4.50++). It is actually pretty good, living up to its standard.
Service I’ve received both times I was there was acceptable too, nothing to suggest that they are impolite or inattentive.
The Marmalade Pantry has 2 outlets – In The City (ION Orchard) and At The Stables (Fairways Drive). A very hard one to rate, this one. I can’t decide whether or not I’ll be recommending. If there’s a 2.5 stars / 4 stars, I would do that.
